What Is E20 Petrol? A Complete Guide for Indian Vehicle Owners

If you've refuelled anywhere in India recently, you've filled your tank with E20 petrol, whether you noticed the small green sticker on the pump or not. E20 means the petrol contains up to 20% ethanol blended with 80% petrol. India completed its nationwide rollout of E20 ahead of schedule, making it one of the most ambitious ethanol-blending programmes in the world.

Why did India switch to E20?

The reasons are economic and environmental. India imports the majority of its crude oil, and blending domestically produced ethanol (made from sugarcane, maize and rice) reduces the import bill by thousands of crores every year. Ethanol also burns cleaner than pure petrol, cutting carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions. For farmers, the programme creates a large, steady market for crops.

How is E20 different from the petrol you used before?

Older Indian petrol was E5 (5% ethanol) and later E10. Jumping to 20% ethanol changes the fuel's chemistry in ways your engine can feel:

• Lower energy content — ethanol carries about 33% less energy per litre than petrol, so E20 delivers roughly 3–7% lower mileage in most vehicles.

Is your vehicle E20-compatible?

Vehicles manufactured in India from April 2023 onwards are E20-compliant from the factory — check for an E20 sticker near the fuel cap. Vehicles from roughly 2009–2023 were designed for E10 and will run on E20, but may experience faster wear of fuel-system rubber parts, mild corrosion and a noticeable mileage drop. Pre-2009 vehicles need the most care.
