How to Improve Bike Mileage in India: 10 Tips That Actually Work

For most Indian riders, mileage isn't a nice-to-have — it decides the monthly fuel budget. Yet the average bike on Indian roads delivers 10–20% below its potential, losing economy to a combination of maintenance neglect, riding habits and the E20-era fuel system deposits nobody talks about. Here are ten fixes, ranked by effort versus reward.

Fuel system and maintenance

  • Keep the fuel system clean — a 100ml bottle of Atomax treats up to 40 litres of petrol and is intended to help remove injector or carburettor deposits as you ride. Follow the dosage and service interval printed on the bottle.
  • Keep tyre pressure at spec, checked weekly — 3–4 psi low silently costs 3–5% economy and dulls handling.
  • Service the air filter. Indian dust clogs filters fast, and a choked filter forces rich running.
  • Lubricate and correctly tension the chain — a dry, tight chain wastes engine power before it reaches the wheel.
  • Use the engine oil grade your manual specifies — thicker isn't better; it increases drag.

Riding technique

  • Stay in the economy band — most Indian commuter bikes are most efficient at 40–55 km/h in top gear. Every 10 km/h above 60 costs disproportionately more fuel.
  • Shift up early and accelerate gently — hard acceleration is the thirstiest thing you can do; short-shifting at moderate revs saves 10%+ in city riding.
  • Kill the engine at long signals — anything over 30 seconds, switch off. BS6 starters handle it easily.
  • Anticipate traffic instead of braking hard — every hard brake throws away fuel you burned to build that speed.
  • Shed the extra weight and drag — heavy top-boxes, saddle bags you don't need, and even severely worn sprockets all tax mileage.

Why the fuel-system tip comes first

Riding technique requires attention every day, while fuel-system cleaning is periodic preventive care. Combine a clean fuel system with correct tyre pressure, proper maintenance and smooth acceleration for the best efficiency your bike can deliver under its actual riding conditions.
