How Often Should You Use a Fuel Additive? The Complete Dosage Guide

<p>More is not better, and once-in-a-blue-moon is not enough — fuel additive dosing has a right answer, and it depends on your vehicle and its condition. This guide covers every common case with Atomax's treatment ratios (100ml treats up to 40 litres; 250ml treats up to 100 litres), but the principles apply to any quality additive.</p>
<h2>Step 1: The first-time deep clean</h2>
<p>If the vehicle has never used an additive, begin with the dosage and interval printed on the product label. Do not increase the concentration in an attempt to accelerate cleaning. A mechanical fault or heavily restricted component still requires professional diagnosis.</p>
<h2>Step 2: The maintenance rhythm</h2>
<ul>
<li><strong>Bikes and scooters:</strong> one 100ml bottle every 2,000 km, roughly every 3–4 fills for a typical commuter.</li>
<li><strong>Petrol cars and SUVs:</strong> dose every 3,000 km, or every second full tank. A 250ml bottle covers two 40–50L tanks.</li>
<li><strong>Occasionally used vehicles:</strong> dose every tank, since fuel sits long enough to age — the stabiliser chemistry matters more than the detergency here.</li>

<h2>How to add it correctly</h2>
<p>Pour the additive into the tank first, then refuel — the incoming fuel mixes it evenly. Adding it to an already-full tank works, but mixing is slower. There's no need to run the tank low first; additives are compatible with the fuel already in the tank.</p>
<h2>Three mistakes to avoid</h2>
<ul>
<li>Overdosing "for faster results" — detergent chemistry has an optimal concentration; doubling the dose doesn't double the cleaning and wastes product. Stick to the treat ratio.</li>
<li>One-time use, then forgetting — deposits rebuild in 3,000–5,000 km of Indian driving on E20 fuel. The benefit compounds only with regular use.</li>
<li>Expecting an additive to fix mechanical faults — worn plugs, a failing pump or a vacuum leak need a mechanic. Additives fix deposit and fuel-quality problems, which happen to be the most common ones.</li>

<h2>The cost math</h2>
<p>Preventive fuel-system care costs far less than replacing a damaged pump or injector, but an additive cannot guarantee a particular mileage or financial saving. Its value is in supporting cleanliness, corrosion protection and consistent operation when fuel-system deposits are the problem.</p>
