E20 vs Normal Petrol: What Actually Changed at the Pump?

"Normal" petrol in India was never pure petrol — it has contained some ethanol for over a decade. What changed is the amount: from 5% (E5) in the 2010s, to 10% (E10) by 2022, to 20% (E20) today. Doubling the ethanol share is a bigger chemical change than most drivers realise. Here's the honest comparison.

Energy and mileage

E10 carries about 3% less energy than pure petrol; E20 carries about 6–7% less. In practice, moving from E10 to E20 costs most vehicles 3–5% in fuel economy. Over a year of 10,000 km at today's fuel prices, that's a real cost of ₹2,000–4,000 for a typical car, which is why managing the other losses in your fuel system matters more than ever.

Octane and performance

Ethanol is high-octane (RON ~108), so E20 petrol has slightly better knock resistance than E10. Engines designed for E20 can use this for marginally better performance. Older engines don't benefit — their ECUs weren't calibrated to exploit it.

Moisture and storage behaviour

This is the least discussed but most consequential difference. E20 absorbs roughly twice the moisture E10 does. Fuel left sitting in a tank for 3–4 weeks can begin phase separation — a corrosive water-ethanol layer settling at the bottom of the tank, exactly where the fuel pickup sits. Vehicles that are parked for long periods are most at risk.

Deposits and fuel system health

  • E20's stronger solvent action dislodges old tank varnish that then fouls injectors.
  • Ethanol provides no lubrication for fuel pumps and injectors — petrol's natural lubricity is diluted.
  • Corrosion risk on steel and aluminium fuel components increases with ethanol share.

The takeaway

E20 is better for the country's oil bill and air quality, and perfectly workable for your vehicle, provided you compensate for what the fuel itself no longer provides.
