E20 Petrol Mileage Drop: Why It Happens and How to Fix It

Across ownership forums and service centres in India, one complaint has become universal since E20 petrol rolled out: "My mileage has dropped." It isn't your driving style, and it isn't your imagination — it's chemistry. Here's exactly why E20 reduces fuel economy and, more importantly, what you can do about it.

The science: less energy per litre

Petrol contains roughly 32 MJ of energy per litre; ethanol only about 21 MJ. Blend 20% ethanol into petrol and each litre carries about 6–7% less energy. Engines calibrated for E20 recover some of this through optimised ignition timing, so real-world losses average 3–7%, but older E10-era vehicles sit at the worse end of that range.

The hidden multiplier: dirty injectors

The mileage drop many owners see is bigger than chemistry alone explains. That's because ethanol's solvent action strips old deposits from the tank and fuel lines and redeposits them on hot injector tips. A partially fouled injector sprays a stream instead of a fine mist, fuel burns incompletely, and mileage falls further — a fouled fuel system can cost another 5–10% on top of the E20 penalty.

Five ways to recover your mileage

  • Clean the fuel system — use a detergent-based fuel additive for two consecutive tanks to dissolve injector and valve deposits, then a maintenance dose every 2,000–3,000 km. This addresses the largest recoverable loss.
  • Keep tyres at the recommended pressure — even 3 psi low costs 2–3% fuel economy.
  • Service air filters on time; a clogged filter makes the engine run rich.
  • Ride/drive smoothly — gentle acceleration and steady speeds in the 45–60 km/h band (bikes) or 60–80 km/h (cars) are where Indian vehicles are most efficient.
  • Don't idle — BS6 engines restart efficiently, switch off at signals longer than 30 seconds.

What results to expect

You cannot change the lower energy content of ethanol with an additive. What preventive fuel-system care can address is the separate loss caused by deposits and a degraded injector spray pattern. Keeping the system clean may support smoother idling, consistent response and the performance the engine can deliver with the fuel in its tank.
